I am starting a new group of women warriors, female fighters.... call us what you will. Picking a name and a uniform will be the tasks of the first meeting. I want twenty-five women who are willing to fight beside me for women's rights. Women who are willing to get arrested for women's rights. Women who are not only willing to talk the talk but walk the walk. The group will make precision strikes at selected targets. Strikes might include sitting in the congressional gallery and holding up banners regarding women's rights, picketing the White House, marching into Pelosi's office single file, dropping bags of rocks off at an embassy after a woman is stoned, doing a visibility line on Massachusetts Avenue at rush hour or blowing up pictures of our nation's currency and holding pictures of it outside the Department of the Treasury with sign that read, "where are the women?" We will take pages out of the playbooks of PETA, SEA SHEPARD, CODEPINK, and other groups that are at times annoying but very effective. Here is the job description:
Willing to attend weekly strategy meeting in DC. Willing to protest at least monthly, maybe weekly in DC. We need two photographers who can take photos of our actions. We need one videographer who can video our actions and post on you-tube. We need two media people who can make contacts with local media and advise them of our actions. We need two communications specialists who can contact all the members of the group by text, email, phone, and coordinate communications. We need two writers who can blog about our activities. We need two lawyers who can advise us if our activities are illegal. We need three researchers who help identify targets, research who they are and where they go. We need two props people who can create and maintain props. We need creative minds, lots of them, to help think of ways to strike effectively. We need former military people who can help coordinate our activities. We need you.
Obviously, I'm serious. This is serious. If you have the kind of dedication and fighting spirit we need, please contact me at drlynettelong@aol.com.
You must live in the Washington DC area. We need to show up where our leaders will and work.
I need you. I want you. Are there 25 brave committed women out there? Let's see.

If this is something you are still serious about, I'm a second year law student, but have access to many lifelong attorneys, constitutional attorneys, and civil rights attorneys. If you are still in need of legal advice, I would be more than willing to research any questions and actions for which you may need the legal okay. I am 2 hours from DC though, so I would be unable to be too involved other than getting you off the record legal assistance.

I am a long-time conservative Catholic mom of four and a Palin supporter who could never have supported Hillary Clinton.......ever.........but wow. I have so much respect for your movement even though we disagree on some critical things. I watch with much interest and I do wish you success (although not on everything).
I think we all have to respect those who are obviously independent thinkers and are willing to fight for what they think is right no matter whose toes they step on. The women in your movement fit in that category, in my book, and I applaud you for your courage and your perseverance.....as well as your correct position on a number of things!
Again, I will be watching with interest and I will find pleasure in lending my support on any issues with which we can find agreement. Good luck.

I think this is a great idea. I'm in San Francisco, so won't be able to help in the DC area, but when ready to bring the movement out west, count me in!

would like to share a story with you. My friend,Monica,is a divorced single mom. She decided to take her three children: a boy and two girls to a Holiday Inn hotel /Coco Key Water Park in Waterbury,CT during school break. She was in the water park and the management decided to close the water park early. She told her children that they would go to the hotel pool and continue swimming. Her eldest( a daughter) and she were dressed and sitting in the pool area, while the two younger children played in the pool. The pool was occupied by a group of Jewish men and boys. The youngest(a girl) was approached by a man in the pool. He informed her that she would need to get out of the pool. It was a "men only swimming session". It did not sit well. My friend approached the management and was told to keep her voice down, when she questioned why as a hotel guest, she was not informed that she and her daughters would not be able to use the pool. She was asked to step outside the pool area to speak to the manager. She refused. She asked repeatedly to know why she was being asked to leave. Another female guest and her daughter were told the same thing. The management then told them that the pool was reserved, although as she entered the pool area there were no signs stating that the pool had been reserved. The lifeguard that was present in the pool area had not approached my friend to inform her and appeared to have no knowledge of the reservation. As she had made her reservation weeks earlier, she was told that all the facilities were available to her. She then told the management that she expected a full refund as she checked out of the hotel. She called me and relayed the story. Imagine in this country, at this time, a man approaching an 8 yr old girl and telling her that she's not good enough to swim in the same pool with the men and boys!!!!!!!!!! Please pass this story along. I will be contacting the management of this hotel. And I intend to continue to share this story with everyone that I meet .

Lynette, I'm with you. Boots on the ground are what counts. I live in L.A. Could you do something in S.F. or Los Angeles?
Some of these posters seem like like Obots, discouraging and ugly.
I'd like a list of female organizations, ready for action and not in love with Obama. Women need to protest Rick Warren at the inaugural like the gays and lesbians. It's amazing that I haven't heard a peep out of them.
Posted by: pumabear | December 27, 2008 at 09:43 PM
I live in DC and I am disgusted. What disgusts me most is that most of my female friends feel Obama is historic and Hillary Clinton is not. While I try to not be negative, I am honestly feeling (depressed) that women are their own worst enemies. 'Its not the right woman' is something I heard from more women than men these days.
I love your work Dr. Long, I heard you speak with Gov. Sarah "its not the right woman" Palin but I am completely disillusioned with humanity! Women are supporting Obama's ridiculous "Commission on Gender". We have had a similar commission in the UN since forever and it is bollocks - the Saudis have a seat on it...
Sexism seems fundamental to the human brain. Racial Apartheid in South Africa, abomination. Gender apartheid in Africa and The Gulf, no big deal.
Posted by: HC | December 22, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Dr. Long, have you received any response to your idea from women in the DC area? Have you given any further thought to making this a national organization?
Posted by: Kathy Skerl | December 22, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Come on, women. No one is going to hand your rights to us along with a bouquet of roses. Men have no interest in treating us as equals, because that would spoil their privileged lives. If we want our rights, we will have to take them. No more excusing, forgiving, cringing from confrontation. Fight, damn it, fight!

Love your plans! I live far from DC, but join you in spirit.
One idea for you: Take a look at the Washington Post article on Favreau, which looks like a positive-spin-damage-control-piece to get Favreau out of the dog house and to endear him to the public (yuck). It notes in the article that Favreau has been working on Obama’s inaugural speech –“ Jon Favreau settles into a wooden chair at a busy Starbucks in the center of Penn Quarter.” Maybe you all could find out where Favreau works in public, and picket (or something similar) to call attention to the issue!

We have been really dragged over the coals by this misogynist bamboozler and the media! And, like most “battered women” we have take it….Now we see the tragedy of Bettyjean and her daughters…it brings a lot of things to mind, how we accept things we shouldn’t accept.
We are in a nexus of real intolerance and garbage being dished out by this creep andhis accomplices. The latest article by Favreau in the WaPo, case in point!
Bettyjean, Denise and Louisa have been on my mind and in my heart ever since I heard about the dreadful attack…

Dr Long,
You need to consider recruiting a couple of women in Chicago who are willing to somehow get into THE ONE's press conferences and start demanding John Favreau be fired...I mean shouting and yelling at him until they are dragged out. I can't believe no one has done this yet!
I know this is just another email, but I got an email from womancount pac and they wanted me to sign some petition asking THE ONE to appoint more women to his cabinet. This is what I sent back to them:
"If you think sending emails and signing petitions is going to make a difference in what this president-elect is going to do, you are sadly deluded. He could care less. Face it, well behaved women do not make history because they don't get anything done. What are you doing about this John Favreau jerk who is going to end up in the sexist White House? Do you think his behavior is ok? Well it isn't.
It's about time women started doing more than sending emails and get out into the streets and make it known that it isn't business as usual until this sexist dude is fired and the so-called president-elect starts showing some respect for women. I have had it with these weak, milk-toast efforts. The suffragettes didn't write letters; they ended up in jail being tortured because they acted on their beliefs.
Women lost about 40 years of progress during this past presidential campaign and the blame can be put squarely at the feet of the so-called president -elect and the idiotic women who voted for him. The younger women will be paying the consequences for their stupidity for a very long time. And I have no sympathy because they don't even care. There was some young woman laughing in the background of that picture of John Favreau...go girl; you deserve to make 70 cents for every dollar a man makes for the rest of your life."

I'm in, but I live in Washington, not the D.C. one. If you get some lawyers involved, be sure they are licensed to give you legal advice in the state and/or distrcit in which you are taking action. Otherwise, they could face criminal and ethics charges. If you get the D. C. group up and running, think about expanding to the other states. From what I can see here in the comments, many women, not in your area, want to join the fight, like me.

I'm way out here in NM but may be able to help via blogging!
In the meantime, I think you will be rather shocked by this story about AIKO...This is not a joke!!

Me too. But live in AZ.

Dr. Lynette,
I like the idea, but I hope your group will not resemble PETA or the PINK ladies. I think a serious methodical approach to protesting is best and will insure respect. I live in Philly so I don't believe I can attend meetings in Washington DC. But I am creative, a classical composer, and I would love to share my ideas with you.
I love your idea about dumping stones at the embassy of a country where a women has been stoned. I hope you will also set your sites on record companies that promote Rap "Music" which is the greatest force of misogyny in America and is creating a culture that is down right unsafe for women. Barak Obama benefited in many ways from America's predisposition to this vulgar culture, and the vicious attacks on Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin are the result of our callus and desensitized population.

This is absolutely what needs to be done. I am not in DC, but I support this effort. Well behaved women do not make history. We need to rock!
Posted by: Puma for Life | December 16, 2008 at 05:50 PM
This makes me so sad. What a monumental waste of time. But then, you never knew who Hillary really was or you wouldn't have wasted time on her either. Had you done your homework you could never have supported a woman as ready to stomp on anyone to make her way in politics. This is about a narcissistic woman who wanted nothing but power and conned a whole lot of smart women.
PETA is a worthy cause. This will marginalize women. Don't do it. It's cruel to women because it makes us all look stupid and it incites gender wars.

Lynette , I live in Ocean City MD which is only two hours from DC , if you ever need an escape to the beach I am here , and I have a creative mind :)

To SadStateOfAffairs. Why on earth don't you just post that presentation as a regular PowerPoint document? There are Mac users out here, you know. I would like to see the presentation and if it were posted properly, both Mac and pc users could download and use it.
As to Dr. Long's project, I wish you the best. WE need this. We also need key people to be spokespeople against ALL misogynist acts. WE must change from the ground up. Example: I heard a radio ad for Deynce Graves describing her as a world renown mezzo-sopranist. AND "she is a beautiful woman." Are the tenors described as "handsome?" We must stop all gratuitous references to appearance in women. Just one small example.

I too would love to get involved with this, however I am a left-coaster. I believe that ridicule is a far more effective tool than anything. It is a far gentler form of teaching than say violence or meanness. And the powers that be with their enormous egos fear ridicule more as they want to be lionized and taken seriously. Violence is always counterproductive, and places one in a morally inferior postion; mental stability can always be questioned. Think Gandhi. One blogger suggested that New York should be considered as it is the media captial, that's great but it needs to be combined with California's street theater flair. Part of the problem is that the media in this country is now owned by major corporations that have a vested interest in sexism. They believe it lowers the cost of doing business; we need to make it an expensive "ism" for them.
Posted by: AnneE | December 13, 2008 at 12:47 PM
For a long time I have thought that violence is what is missing from the woman's movement. Violence is a concept that men understand on a primal level. I understand this is more like civil disobedience which is good too. But I cringe at the mention of PETA. I do hope this is not going to be another group of women who really really want to pull their pants down in public for whatever cause, like PETA women do. That is really vapid and undermines women everywhere.

Lynette - I realize you're trying to get something up and running in D.C. which is challenging enough, but have you also considered having a group based in NYC, since that's the media capital?

Count me in as Number 26. I am joining your army as a reservist.
I called for for a similar move a while back myself but do to family circumstances -I could not follow through.
I can not always show up for duty but when possible please know I will be there. Just always let me know where there is a need and If I can - I will always join the fight - circumstances allowing. I can protest- or do whatever reserch or blogging is needed. I supposed I can get myself arrested if need be- what the hell- there is always a first time for everything!
Please count me # 26 - It is very important to me that I have standing somewhere in this army! Only my daughters immediate health needs come first.
Posted by: BettyJean Kling | December 10, 2008 at 05:54 PM
I'd love to be involved, but my immigration status is shaky, so getting arrested would be bad. Also, I live across the country in Seattle. But if this works out in DC, maybe we can get something similar going in other regions?
